Kensington Winter Solstice

ida1

Ida Carnevali came to
Kensington Market in 1983.
Clown, director and writer -
Founder and artistic director of Kensington Carnival Theatre.
Along with the generations of people from far-flung places
she made her home in, and found the heart of the market
and appreciated the emergent theatre of it’s inhabitants.
She began her career with street theatre -with masked chicken mascots parading and harkening to bygone days.
Ida engaged many young artists that have continued this legacy in a carnival of costumed characters, sideshows, puppets and fire.
These young artists
emanating from our beloved Kensington Market
contribute to the cultural of sharing,
celebrating it’s history
and manifest the beauty in our diversity.
We honour Ida as we follow her.
Kensington’s Festival of Lights is now
the 23rd Annual Kensington Market Winter Solstice Parade and Celebration
joyously hand made and courageously commercial free.
With the flames sparked by your gifted torch we salute you,
and we carry your drum until you return to lead our festivities once again.
